Health Safety Communications - (1999)
George Mason University (GMU), the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and James Madison University (JMU) completed one year of partnership to promote a safer, healthier public through traffic safety communications. This project extended from January, 1999-December, 1999.
Overall Goals:
1. To promote a safer and healthier public through traffic safety communications such as print media, press releases, public service announcements, website links, and awareness activities.
2. To demonstrate a positive state, university and community partnership through the involvement of key university faculty, classes, office and community work groups that respond to local safety needs and issues.
The partnership was strongest between the campus and state personnel. The key players involved in one included:
Mrs. Jeanne Martino-McAllister, Director, Office of Substance Abuse Research
Ms. Susan Bruce, Assistance Director for health Promotion, University Health Center
Dr. Thomas Syre, Associate Professor, Health 360, Health Care Marketing and Health 451, Health Program Planning
Mr. Bruce TAylor, Instructor, Health 451, Strategies for health Change
Lt. Scott Coverstone, JMU Office of Public Safety
Ms. Christine Letsky-Anderson, Multimedia Development Specialist, Madison Media Lab
Ms. Heather Thomas, Health Sciences practicum student
Ms. Jennifer Phillips, graduate student
Mr. Jahmony Blake, summer graphic student
Targeted Audience
Most of the publications and activities targeted JMU students and faculty. The press releases and public service announcements issued during Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety and Education Week reached a secondary audience in the community.
