Welcome

The Office of Substance Abuse Research believes in the importance of collaboratively addressing alcohol and other drug use, misuse and abuse on our campus and in our communities.

In serving the faculty, staff and students of James Madison University as well as Virginia schools and communities, this office is designed to:

• Research the affective and behavioral dimensions of alcohol and other drug usage among students;
  
  
• Provide a conceptual framework for campus prevention programming;
  
  
• Broaden the participation of faculty in alcohol and other drug abuse prevention and intervention;
  
  
• Evaluate effective prevention practices in the university setting;
  
  
• Prepare students for careers in substance abuse prevention/intervention;
  
  
• Serve as a resource for alcohol and other drug educational materials for students and faculty
  
  
• Provide capacity building opportunities to Virginia schools and community professionals to enhance their abilities to reduce substance abuse and evaluate program effectiveness.
