History

In the early 1990s, the community recognized that a facility to coordinate services for children and youth services was needed.  No existing agency was able to evaluate the youth services in our community, look at unmet needs, conduct research on critical issues, and develop long-range planning for services to children and youth.  By 1997, after further research and state lobbying, the community was able to secure funding and the Office on Children and Youth opened its doors July 1, 1998.

Funding

The Office on Children and Youth, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is funded through a state Department of Juvenile Justice grant with matching funds from the City of Harrisonburg and from Rockingham County.  We also receive money from United Way, City Schools, and the Health Department.  Various in-kind donations also provide us with financial opportunities for special projects.
