Roommate Agreement       OCL Publication

Why use a roommate agreement?

The objective of a roommate agreement is to stimulate discussion and come to a mutual understanding among roommates on issues related to living off campus. Get with your roommate(s) before signing a lease together and honestly discuss likes, dislikes, needs, values, and expectations. Include in your discussions scenarios of what could come up in the course of a year and how each of you expect it to be handled. The more you put into discussing issues now the more problems you will avoid later. Your roommate(s) can make or break your year.

This format is not set in stone!

This is simply a draft. We recommend that you and your roommates design an agreement that fits your expectations, living condition, and lifestyle. Use our form as a guide. Feel free to add or delete any information as long as it is mutually agreed upon.

Is it legal?

This document becomes a legal contract when the appropriate parties sign it. We suggest that each roommate initial each section of the contract as well. A document such as this agreement can be used in a court of law.

What do I do after signing the agreement?

Make copies for every roommate. Keep them in a safe place so you can refer to them if there is ever a need. Keep lines of communication open between all roommates; try to head problems off before they get too big for such small living quarters
