Living Off Campus

Living off campus is quite different from living in a residence hall. Each has its own unique benefits. OCL recommends that all undergraduate students live on campus for at least two years. If transferring to JMU, students should apply for on-campus housing as well as investigating off-campus arrangements. Residence life information may be obtained by viewing page 4-8.

Whether you are new to the JMU community or not, living off campus presents new challenges and opportunities for growth and

change. It is a time for taking on new responsibilities and becoming a member of the local community. You will find that you have more choices and decisions to make on a day-to-day basis, such as budgeting, paying bills, committing to getting to class on time and remaining involved with JMU activities. Students who live off campus succeed when they plan ahead, do not rush into a housing situation and understand their responsibilities both as a member of the local community and as a JMU student.

Looking for Housing: When, What, Where

When To Look

First and foremost, do not rush or be rushed into signing a lease. There is an abundance of undergraduate student housing available in the Harrisonburg area.

  • Take your time and find the option that is right for you.
  • Comparative shopping takes time, start investigating during late fall but don’t sign anything until at least after winter break.
  • Keep notes of each complex you are considering. Make more than one trip to talk to landlords and property managers as well as people who live there now or have rented from that landlord before.
  • Don’t make a hasty decision. Bring information home to your family and discuss all aspects and possibilities.
  • Visit the OCL Housing Fair the first week in November to be sure of your choices.

What To Think About

Your living environment affects every aspect of your college experience and academic success at JMU. It is important to know how to look and what to consider when looking for off-campus housing.

Roommates are the most important choice you will make!!

  • How many do you want and are they responsible people?
  • Are your lifestyles compatible?
  • Consider living and study habits, attitudes toward parties, overnight guests, etc.
  • Whose name will appear on the utility bills?
  • How will chores be divided up?
  • Will you buy food together or separately?
  • Draw up a roommate agreement. Come by OCL for a sample draft or obtain a copy online
