Diversity Committee
February 2, 2001
Members in attendance included: Dr. Doris Martin, Katrina Baskfield, Dr. Oris Griffin, Dr. Solange Lopes-Murphy and Dr. LaNette Dellinger.
Discussion focus: NCATE
1. As a group each element was reviewed. Solange Lopes-Murphy and Oris Griffin shared responses
from past data collected.
2. The committee members discussed methods of assessment for each element.
Methods of Assessment for Element 1
Use syllabi from professors to see if objectives include Issues of Diversity.
Observe random classes.
Continue to use instrument developed by Oris Griffin and Solange Lopes-Murphy.
Use focus group (teacher-to-teacher) and faculty would interview other faculty members.
Use focus group of students.
Review data collected by Oris Griffin and Solage Lopes-Murphy.
Review school goals.
Oris Griffin and Solange Lopes-Murphy will survey school population.
Review focus groups.
Methods of Assessment for Element 2
Review data collected by OTES on population outside of campus.
Review statistics from JMU (SOE and the entire school).
Questionnaires will be used to collect data from students regarding their experiences with
diversity.
Review data from the SOE and CS-L.
Element 3
"Unacceptable"
***Research partnerships with Historically Black Universities.
Methods of Assessment for Element 4
Review data from OTES regarding student placement.
Design template to collect data on the diverse student population candidates are working with in
the schools.
Review program requirements and syllabi.
Review data collected by Oris Griffin and Solage Lopes-Murphy.
Dr. Martin will request that Dr. Sharon Lovell meet with the Diversity Committee on Friday, February 9 at 10:00 and will also follow up with Dr. Griffin's question of who will be responsible for collecting the data.
