Future of alternative fuel technology on display at JMU Oct. 13

You might have heard of James Madison University’s Alternative Fuel Vehicle Lab in the last few years. The lab’s research and development of renewable fuels has led to the implementation of sustainable biodiesel in JMU’s own fleet of vehicles. Four years ago, the lab made headlines through its collaboration with the City of Harrisonburg to phase biofuels into its fleet of transportation vehicles.

But have you ever wondered what it looks like? Here’s your chance to find out.

What: The AFV will host an open house from 6-8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 13 to display two promising new technologies as well as several ongoing student projects.

Who: The public is invited to talk with AFV students and faculty about the future of alternative fuel technologies.

When: 6-8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 13

Where: JMU’s Alternative Fuel Vehicle Lab, 1909 S. Main St., Harrisonburg. (Directly across the street from Wendy's, El Charro, and Bourbon Street - within the fenced lot, white building on the left.)

Details: On display will be prototypes of a diesel-hybrid truck provided by Kenworth and a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle. The diesel-hybrid truck is one of the first big rigs to employ hybrid diesel-electric technology. The truck is up to 30 percent more fuel-efficient than standard diesel trucks.

The Neighborhood Electric Vehicle is compatible with many alternative energy sources currently under development including wind, solar, hydroelectric and nuclear. Visitors will be able to interact with the six-passenger vehicle, which is built to serve neighborhoods as they are redesigned to be closer to work, shopping and entertainment.

“These prototypes really are part of the future of transportation,” said Dr. Chris Bachmann, AFV program director. “As oil runs out, these clean, renewable forms of energy can and need to be used to power our vehicles.”
