General Overview:

Our field trip programs are divided into 20, 30, 40 and 50 minute segments, beginning with a PowerPoint overview of the culture.  Students will participate in a variety of activities including art projects, dance, music, and dramatic readings, depending on the selected program.  The highlight of the day will be a first hand look at the objects in the Madison Art Collection.  Theme lunches (buffet style) are available for an additional $6.00 per person or your school may choose to bring packed lunches.

General Field Trip Answers:

  1. How much does it cost?

We charge $4.00 per child (excludes teachers and chaperones) in addition to any food requested.  The cost of room rental is a donation made by James Madison University to assist Virginian schools.  We will invoice your school for the total bill after the completion of your field trip.  Please do not bring cash or a check.

  2. What days of the week are your field trips?

Our field trips generally run on Tuesdays and Thursday during the academic year (September through early May).  These dates are usually released in May for the following academic year and are booked on a first-come, first-served basis.  Because of high-demand, we limit one field trip per class per year.

  3. What time does the program start and finish?:

The program starts at 9:30am and ends at 2:00pm.  We understand that different school systems may require a later arrival and/or an earlier departure.  Please notify us when booking your field trip of any time changes you require.

  4. What about lunch?

While your students may pack their lunches, we can also offer a themed buffet meal prepared by JMU's catering services.  For an additional fee of $6.00 per person, your students will not only find this culturally themed meal delicious, but also educational.  Please note that for the meal we must invoice you for the total number of people reserved.  You may change that number up to three (3) days in advance of your field trip by notifying Melanie Brimhall (540-568-6934 or brimham@jmu.edu).

  5. Where does the bus park?

The bus should drop off all field trip participants at the front entrance of the Festival Conference and Student Center.  The bus will then park at the Convocation Center in lot Convo F (click here to see a map).

  6. What about chaperones?

We request that you bring 1 chaperone per 7 children, but no more than 20 adults total.

Chaperones must pick up parking permits for Parking Lots R3 and D3, not including handicapped or metered parking spaces (click here to see a map), at the information desk in Festival.
