Workshop in Colonial American Life, Ongoing

Since 1969, students in the Workshop in Colonial American Life (HIST 402/602) have examined life in colonial Virginia through published sources, films, lectures, exhibits, individual research projects, and a five-day visit to Colonial Williamsburg during the summer session. The course usually focuses on one aspect of colonial life, and students research that topic in depth. Here, students try cultivating tobacco plants using colonial-era tools.

Clockwise from top: JMU students try their hands at punishing their professors, pounding corn, wearing colonial clothing, and hilling tobacco.
