The
Summer Historical Archaeology Field School (ANTH 494) is now in its
22nd year.
Working with archaeologists from JMU, Montpelier, and the National
Trust for Historic Preservation, JMU students participate in a
program of ongoing historical archaeology at several sites. For the
past few summers, students have concentrated on the recovery of artifacts
and structural remains associated with the early eighteenth-century
Mount Pleasant site at Montpelier (top right). Mount
Pleasant, the home of James Madison's grandparents Ambrose and
Frances Madison, represents the earliest period of plantation
occupation and development on the Montpelier property.
Students interested in an introductory course in historical
archaeology may also take Historical Archaeology (HIST/ANTH 331) during the regular
academic year. |
