Faculty Handbook Committee Minutes

Friday, October 31, 2003

Present were:  Susan Wheeler, Bill O’Meara, Cynthia Gilliatt, Chuck Bilbrey, Nick Swayne and Andy Kohen

This meeting was focused on Academic Freedom, section III.A.2.a.  The Faculty Senate had proposed a change to defining Academic Freedom as a right of faculty members.  The committee felt this section would require much discussion and rewrite before they had a document for review.  Upon completion of a draft the group would like to have the President, Provost and Senate Speaker review it and give comments.

It is the feelings of the group that faculty members require an assurance that the administration will stand behind them should they become controversial or voice a differing opinion in contrast to the administration.  They want to be assured the right to voice that opinion without fear of repercussions.  The faculty’s pursuit of the truth has to be protected.
